Mount Kinabalu accommodation
Historically climbers were able to climb Mount Kinabalu in 1 day but since 2015 all day climbs have been cancelled. To reach the summit of Mount Kinabalu you will therefore need to stay at least one night at one of the accommodations at Panalaban (3200m asl). All River Junkie Mount Kinabalu summit climbs include an overnight stay at either Laban Rata Resthouse or Pendant Hut, both well-established mountain huts that have been welcoming climbers for many years
Laban Rata Resthouse
Laban Rata Resthouse is nestled in a rocky outcrop on Mount Kinabalu at an elevation of 3272m and offers climbers accommodation in shared dormitories as well as a few private rooms (advance booking essential). The resthouse includes a small shop and a restaurant where climbers come together to enjoy warm buffet meals before and after their summit attempt whilst swopping stories of their Mount Kinabalu experiences.
Electricity is available during generator hours from 5pm - 8pm and 1am - 3am. All rooms at Laban Rata Resthouse are unheated but blankets are provided. |

Restaurant & facilities
Laban Rata Resthouse dining room offers amazing views of the surrounding area (subject to cloud coverage!) as well as preparing 3 hot meals a day for hungry Mount Kinabalu summit climbers. The following meals are included for all climbers staying 1 night at Laban Rata:
There is a also a small shop on site where you can buy instant noodles, drinks & snacks. |
Just bear in mind that everything is brought up to Laban Rata Resthouse on someone's back via the same trail you just used and expect the prices to be significantly higher than in town. Water refills and hot water are available from a water dispenser nearby the dormitories or can be purchased from the restaurant.
Pendant Hut
Located 50m higher than Laban Rata Resthouse, Pendant Hut is Via Ferrata climbers home for the night. This is where you will receive your Via Ferrata briefing at 3.30pm on your arrival day (don't be late!) and spend a short night before getting up at 2am for your summit attempt.
Electricity is available during generator hours from 5pm - 8pm and 1am - 3am. All rooms at Pendant Hut are unheated. Showers are solar heated and the water temperature can vary from quite pleasant to very cold depending on the weather and how many people have showered before you. |

Climbers arriving back from the Via Ferrata by 10am can have their breakfast at Laban Rata Resthouse. Exploring Kinabalu Park
A large network of trails allows you to explore the forest around the base of Mount Kinabalu and a guide is not required, simply take a look at the Kinabalu Park trail map, decide how long you would like to walk for and pick a suitable trail. Trails range from a few hundred meters to a few kilometers and join onto one another, allowing you to extend or shorten your hike as you go.
The Silau-Silau trail is mainly flat as it follows the river whereas the Mempening trail (including Bukit Tupai and Bukit Burung shelters) and Liwagu trail have some uphill and downhill sections. All the trails are signposted but some trails may close suddenly due to fallen trees or scheduled maintenance, visit the Sabah Parks counter next to reception after you arrive to enquire about any trails that may be closed. The mountain garden within Kinabalu Park (RM5 entry fee) is open from 9am to 4pm everyday. Visitors can do a self-guided visit at anytime during the opening hours, however a guided tour through the garden with a Sabah Park's interpretation guide is scheduled at 9am , 12pm and 3pm daily. A Mount Kinabalu climbers briefing is conducted by an in-house naturalist at 6pm everyday, ask at reception or consult the blackboard in the entrance to Liwagu restaurant to find out more about this. |
