This itinerary is for nature lovers who want to see Borneo's rivers, jungles & rainforests in style with accommodation at both the award winning Sukau Rainforest lodge in the Kinabatangan and the luxurious Borneo Rainforest lodge in Danum Valley.
Start your adventure with a visit to Sepilok's orang-utan and sunbear sanctuaries before making your way to the mighty Kinabatangan river. Spend 2 nights at Sukau Rainforest Lodge enjoying 3 river cruises as well as the lodge's in-house boardwalk and plunge pool before continuing on to Danum Valley. Stay 2 nights at the beautiful Borneo Rainforest Lodge and explore the numerous hiking trails around the lodge as well as the extensive canopy walk in search of Danum Valleys's astonishing 340 species of birds, 124 species of mammals, 72 species of reptiles and 56 species of amphibians - a true nature lover's paradise! |
Itinerary
DAY 1: SANDAKAN - SEPILOK SANCTUARIES - KINABATANGAN RIVER
You'll be greeted upon your arrival at Sandakan Airport and transferred to Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre where you'll learn about the plight of the Orang Utan and see firsthand the conservation efforts. After a short introductory video to the centre, walk ten minutes through the rainforest on wooden boardwalks to witness the feeding of the orang utans at 1000hrs before continuing to the newly completed enclosed nursery area for young orang utans. If the Orang Utans are feeling particularly friendly, you may even get the chance to get up close to the Orang Utan so be sure to hang onto your belongings. Thereafter visit the Borneo Sun Bear Conservation Centre to learn about conservation of the world's smallest bear.
*From 1st Jan 2023, the Borneo Sun Bear Conservation Centre visit will no longer be included in this itinerary, guests wishing to visit the centre will still be able to purchase an entry ticket for RM50 per person on the day and spend some time there after visiting the orang-utan sanctuary.
After lunch, you will head onwards by van to the multi-award winning ecolodge Sukau Rainforest Lodge. Check in and savour afternoon tea before heading out into the wild on your first river safari. Every boat is equipped with eco friendly outboard engines (used along the main river where the current is strong) and electric motor (used during wildlife viewing in the small tributaries) in search of wildlife and birds. If you don't see a Proboscis monkey on your first river cruise, ask for a FREE Night Cruise on the lodge! Return for a solar heated hot shower after sunset before enjoying a candle light buffet dinner overlooking the mighty river. Dinner is followed by a slide show and interpretation by the in-house naturalist guide. Meals- L,D.

DAY 2: KINABATANGAN RIVER
An early morning call at 0530hrs to catch the rainforest waking up is in store. After a light breakfast, you will embark on a morning river cruise in search of waking wildlife and birds which are most active in the morning on your way to the Kelenanap Ox-Bow lake. Return to a full breakfast, after which you will proceed for an educational walking tour along the lodge's Hornbill Boardwalk with the in-house naturalist followed by some time to relax. If you are looking for more to do, just enquire as there are
different free activities on offer everyday. You can also feel free to explore the boardwalk at the back of the lodge. Who knows you may get lucky and spot an Orang Utan! After afternoon tea, head out onto the river once again in search of more wildlife, returning at sunset from your final river cruise.

DAY 3: KINABATANGAN RIVER - LAHAD DATU - DANUM VALLEY
After breakfast, check-out around 7:15 am for a departure by land to Lahad Datu to Borneo Rainforest Lodge’s office, for a 9:30 am transfer. The journey will take about 2 hours. Enjoy the changing landscapes of the regenerating forests to virgin rainforests of millions of years old. Check into the lodge upon arrival and settle in. Meet your guide and enjoy lunch. After a short rest, your guide will give you an introduction to the Borneo rainforest and the trails surrounding the lodge. After dinner, go on a guided night safari to spot nocturnal creatures.

DAY 4: DANUM VALLEY
Day 4- Wake up to the calls of Borneo Gibbons and start your day with a guided trek to the viewpoint and burial site - Coffin Cliff. Take a short break by the natural pool for a refreshing dip before returning for lunch at the lodge. In the afternoon, go on optional activities such as guided jungle trekking, or weather permitting, water tubing session down the Danum River. Join a guided night walk on the nature trail after dinner in search of Danum Valley's nocturnal residents!

DAY 5: DANUM VALLEY - LAHAD DATU
Day 5- Optional early morning walk and return to the lodge for a leisurely lunch before checking out at 1.30pm for the 2-hour transfer to Lahad Datu town, arriving by 3.30pm. If you are not planning to leave from Lahad Datu airport (LDU) just let us know, transfers to Semporna, Sandakan and other destinations can be arranged on request, additional fees apply.
